The Road Beneath The Street

Nikki Carr

Tons of hot metal

catapulting over gravel skin

withered and cracked by weight weary from

answering constant visitors knocks

at her door, which caused

bumps to form like kosher dills

plucked from freshly salted brine

naturally ripe for fermentation,

yet sewn together

with tar and cement

like a patchwork quilt

only to leave cracks

and wrinkles down sides

of her  face.
